Brasil tem um dos piores índices de proficiência em inglês do mundo

Entre os países dos BRIC, brasileiros só foram melhores que os russos

Obama há duas semanas no Brasil: brasileiros ainda gaguejam na hora de falar o idioma das terras do presidente americano

São Paulo – O Brasil ostenta um dos piores índices de proficiência na língua inglesa do mundo. É o que indica pesquisa da escola e agência de intercâmbios Education First (EF).

De acordo com o estudo, os brasileiros receberam nota média de 47,27 no índice English Proficiency Index (EPI) – desempenho inferior ao apresentado por participantes de países como Argentina, Costa Rica e República Tcheca.

Com isso, o Brasil conquistou a 31ª posição em ranking de 44 países que não têm o inglês como língua oficial.

Entre os BRICs, o país ficou apenas na frente da Rússia. China e Índia levaram, respectivamente, nota média de 47,62 e 47,35 – índices também considerados baixos pela pesquisa.

Para chegar a esses resultados, a instituição avaliou o desempenho de 2 milhões de pessoas de 44 países diferentes em quatro testes online de proficiência em inglês elaborados pela agência.

“Os exames abordavam questões de gramática, compreensão auditiva, leitura e vocabulário”, afirma Julio de Angeli, vice-presidente da EF Englishtown para a Europa e Américas.

Latinos 
Mas o Brasil não foi o único a decepcionar nos índices de proficiência em inglês. A América Latina foi a região que teve o pior desempenho entre os países analisados.

A Argentina foi a melhor colocada entre os países da região com nota de 53,49. No ranking latino, o Brasil ficou com a 6ª posição – à frente do Chile, que possui uma política de Estado voltado para o ensino de inglês.

Toyota, Struggling With Part Shortages, to Restart Car Lines

TOKYO — Toyota Motor said Thursday that it will restart production of its Prius and Lexus hybrid models next week, while Honda extended the shutdown of two of its factories until next month — illustrating how Japanese automakers are still struggling to recover from the country’s devastating earthquake and tsunami.

A major problem for all the automakers, including those outside Japan, is ensuring a reliable supply of parts from Japanese component makers. Shortages of an electronic sensor from Hitachi, for example, have led to slowdowns this week at Peugeot and Opel factories in Europe.
With parts supplies uncertain, Toyota has been changing its forecast for reopening shuttered plants on an almost daily basis. Its vaunted just-in-time manufacturing system depends on parts being delivered to factories as they are needed, with minimum stockpiling.
The company closed 18 Japanese assembly plants after the March 11 quake, as well as seven facilities that make parts and engines.
Only Wednesday, Toyota had told its workers in North America that it expects to halt production at one or more plants because of shortages of Japanese-made parts, and that its overseas operations would be affected in some fashion.
On Thursday, Paul Nolasco, a Toyota spokesman in Tokyo, said production of three hybrid models — the Prius and two Lexus brand hybrids — would resume Monday.
“There’s pretty strong demand for our hybrid vehicles around the world, so we’re focusing on them,” he said. The Prius will be made in the Tsumi plant in Toyota City, while the Lexuses will be made by Toyota Motor Kyushu in Kitakyushu, the southernmost of Japan’s three main islands.
Mr. Nolasco acknowledged that Toyota’s supplies of electronics, rubber and plastic resin parts remain uncertain, and would not predict when full production would return.
“We’ve been able to reestablish the supply chain for these three models,” Mr. Nolasco said. “But when we start production Monday, we have to keep a careful eye on the flow of parts in the supply chain to make sure that can be maintained.”

The cellphone has been more than a cellphone for years, but soon it could take on an entirely new role — standing in for all of the credit and debit cards crammed into wallets.

Instead of swiping a plastic card at the checkout counter, consumers would merely wave their phones.
There’s just one hitch: While the technology is already being installed in millions of phones — and is used overseas — wide adoption of the so-called mobile wallets is being slowed by a major behind-the-scenes battle among corporate giants.
Mobile phone carriers, banks, credit card issuers, payment networks and technology companies are all vying to control these wallets. But first, they need to sort out what role each will play and how each will get paid.
The stakes are enormous because small, hidden fees that are generated every time consumers swipe their cards add up to tens of billions of dollars annually in the United States alone.
“It all comes down to who gets paid and who makes money,” said Drew Sievers, chief executive of mFoundry, which makes mobile payment software for merchants and banks. “You have banks competing with carriers competing with Apple and Google, and it’s pretty much a goat rodeo until someone sorts it out.”

Culture: St. Patrick's Day

Amanhã é comemorado internacionalmente o feriado religioso de Sant Patrick, mais famoso padroeiro da Irlanda. É um dos dias que antecederam o consumo do álcool nos Estados Unidos, e é normalmente um dos dias mais movimentados do ano para bares e restaurantes. Tradicionalmente, os que são capturados e não estão usando verde dão beliscados.

Como bons amantes da cultura mundial, amanhã nós da equipe e alguns alunos Smart (maiores), iremos vestidos de verde (como manda a tradição) à um restaurante da cidade comemorar o dia de St. Patrick.

Cine Pipoca

Na ultima sexta-feira 11/03, aconteceu na Smart o Cine Pipoca. Um encontro divertidissímo entre nossos alunos KIDS e TEENS para assistir "Despicable Me" (Meu Malvado Favorito). Regado a pipoca, refrigerantes e guloseimas, o encontro foi uma aula extra, onde nossos aluninhos puderam treinar o seu inglês.

Music of the week

Essa semana, em comemoração ao International Women’s Day, o Smart Music of the week  é dedicado à todas as mulheres que fazem, farão ou ainda não perceberam que podem fazer diferente!

As ilustrações são de Gustav Klimt (1862 1918) um pintor simbolista austríaco e um dos mais proeminentes membros do movimento Vienna Art Nouveau. Muitos dos seus trabalhos incluem pinturas e outros objetos de arte em que o foco principal é o corpo feminino.

 A Música é “Woman” de John Lenon, do álbum Double Fantasy, de 1980 e foi escrito para sua esposa Yoko Ono, mas acaba sendo uma homenagem a todas as mulheres.
